James Shields & Company joined the 12 month VECCI 'Grow Me The Money' environmental sustainability program in June 2009. This program provided us with a framework around which we were able to put into action a number of sustainability initiatives, some of which we have listed below.

  1. Switching to Australian-made, 100% recycled paper (made from 100% post-consumer waste) for all invoicing and standard printing and copying.
  2. Switching to 25% acdredited GreenPower electricity.
  3. Installing a compost bin for organic waste, including paper towels (composted on site in our front garden).
  4. De-lamping office light fittings to reduce electricity consumption.
  5. Installing a water-saving shower head and flush restrictors to toilet cisterns to reduce water consumption.
  6. Switching off the toilet exhaust system overnight and at weekends.
  7. Fine tuning and expanding our recycling programs to include recycling of CDs / DVDs, e-Waste items, household batteries, mobile phones, toner/printer cartridges, polypropylene banding/strapping, polystyrene packaging.
  8. Adjusting power-saving settings to computer monitors and turning off non-essential equipment overnight and at weekends.
  9. Conducting regular waste audits to monitor waste streams.
  10. Encouraging staff to turn off lights to work areas that are not being used whilst they are absent, eg at lunch or working elsewhere in the premises.
